What is the Great Commission?
The Great Commission comes from Matthew 28:18-20:
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”
These are Jesus’ last words to his disciples before he ascended into Heaven. Jesus commands us to make disciples and teach. Christians are to help people from every people group know, love, and follow Jesus. This includes our neighbors as well as the millions of unreached people in Indonesia. There are over 7,000 unreached people groups in the world, so there’s still much work to be done!
But take heart! Jesus promises to be with us and to give us what we need to accomplish this task. Great progress has been made over the last few decades in seeing all people reached with the gospel. The internet is a big reason why. People everywhere have access to the truth for the first time.
Why Should You Be Involved in the Great Commission?
Because Jesus wants us to be involved! And because there really is nothing greater than being part of completing the task of world evangelization. God has a purpose for you, and part of it involves telling others about Jesus. We have been blessed by God, and now it is our turn to be a blessing.
